Wing Commander II design notes read, “Combat; main”.

DOGFIGHT SEGMENTS - INTRODUCTION

Warren Spector’s commission to George Sanger (1990-06-22) reads, “This is where the player will spend the bulk of his time in Wingleader*, so it’s where we need the greatest variety in the music. There are 6 distinct themes and six minor variations. (Of course, each theme/variation must segue as smoothly as possible into the others – the action in a dogfight is fast and furious and changes constantly.)

“1. Regular combat
2. Being tailed
3. Tailing an enemy
4. Missile tracking you
5. You’re severely damaged
6 This one really counts!
7. Killed your target
8. Ally killed
9. Your wingman’s been killed
10. Enemy ace/commander’s been killed
11. Overall victory and 12. Overall defeat”

For some of these cues, David Govett’s original full-length “Dogfight” was broken down and some further expanded. But others were newly composed. We find this mentioned in Sanger’s notes:

“Re-organizing the old “Dogfight” into:
Tailing An Enemy
Intense Combat
Overall Victory
Enemy Ace Killed
You’re Severely Damaged
Extra, long victory”

However, this note is actually not entirely accurate. The segments became the following:
• Regular Combat (part 1 of 3)
• Overall Victory
• Regular Combat (part 2 of 3)
• Tailing an Enemy
• Intense Combat
• Enemy Ace Killed
• Regular Combat (part 2 of 3 – this is correct, part 3 of Regular Combat was not part of the original Dogfight)
• Being Tailed
• Intense Combat
• Enemy Ace Killed
• Extra Long Victory

*The second work-in-progress title for Wing Commander, the first being Squadron.
